Child & Family Investigations in Colorado

Ensuring that children's voices and needs are not lost in the legal process.

What is a CFI?

A Child & Family Investigator (CFI) is a neutral professional appointed by the court to investigate specific issues affecting children in family law cases and then provide a written report and recommendations to the court. CFIs are appointed to provide a simple solution when a parental responsibilities evaluation is not necessary. Instead, a CFI provides a more limited, non-intrusive assessment to help the court understand children’s living conditions, relationships, and safety — allowing the court to make informed decisions about parenting time, decision-making responsibilities, relocation, or other matters impacting children’s best interests.

CFI appointments and standards are governed by Chief Justice Directive 04-08 (CJD 04-08) and C.R.S. §14-10-116.5, which require that investigations remain focused, efficient, and child-centered.

What to Expect

Once the court appoints a Child & Family Investigator, the process typically includes a review of relevant court filings and documents; interviews with each parent, the children (as appropriate), and other important adults such as teachers or providers; contact with collateral sources; and home visits. The CFI gathers information focused on the specific issues identified in the appointment order, maintains neutrality throughout, and keeps the investigation streamlined under the timelines established by Colorado law. At the conclusion of the investigation, the CFI provides a written report to the court, the parties, and the parties' counsel with recommendations based on the children’s best interests — and may testify if the case proceeds to a hearing or trial.

Susan's Approach

I take a child-centered, trauma-aware approach grounded in neutrality, respect, and transparency. Every family has its own dynamics, challenges, and strengths, so I focus on understanding each child’s unique needs and experiences while treating all parties with dignity throughout the process. I communicate clearly about expectations, gather information thoughtfully and efficiently, and provide recommendations that are firmly rooted in Colorado’s “best interests of the child” standard. My goal is to provide the court with balanced insight — and help families move forward with clarity, safety, and stability.

Fees and Curriculum Vitae

My fees follow the structure established by Colorado’s CFI program. I charge $110 per hour, with a presumptive fee cap of $3,250, which is typically paid as a retainer and covers the investigation and written report. If the court approves additional hours, fees may exceed the presumptive cap. I also accept state pay for eligible cases. To learn more about my background and experience, you can review my Child & Family Investigator Curriculum Vitae.
